The Portland Pickles and Columbia Bank are proud to announce that a couple of Big 10 conference talents will be joining the team for the 2017 season.
Stephen Kalina is a redshirt sophomore with the Purdue Boilermakers baseball program. The middle infielder from Edina, MN bats left-handed and throws right-handed. After redshirting in 2015, he appeared in 20 games in 2016, making six starts and recording four hits, while making the Academic All-Big Ten team. An ankle injury has kept him from the field this spring, but he hopes to make a return before the end of the season, prior to his arrival in Portland. Kalina graduated from Edina High School in 2014 and batted over .300 during his prep career.
Alex Henwood is a sophomore at the University of Nebraska. He is a middle infielder from Appleton, WI, who was ranked by Perfect Game as the second best shortstop and ninth best overall player in the state of Wisconsin for the class of 2015. He hit .427 as a senior at North Appleton High School. During his freshman campaign with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Henwood appeared in five games. So far this season, Alex is batting .333 in five games, registering an RBI and a perfect fielding percentage. The Cornhuskers are managed by former MLB player Darin Erstad, who won a World Series title with the Anaheim Angels in 2002.
