Pickles Announce New Manager

October 11th, 2016

PORTLAND—Former Major League pitcher Jeff Lahti is the new Portland Pickles manager. The Oregon-native will take the helm for the 2017 season.  “Getting back involved with the game in the Portland area is something I’ve wanted to do for a while” said Lahti, “I’m excited for the opportunity to bring the Pickles to a new level”.  “Jeff exudes the presence of a winner”, said team owner Bill Stewart.  “We look forward to having him aboard and adding his MLB experience to our organization”.

Lahti pitched in the Majors from 1982 to 1986 with the St. Louis Cardinals, under the direction of Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog.  His teammates included Hall of Famers Ozzie Smith and Bruce Sutter.  He pitched on the Cardinals’ World Series winning team in his rookie season, 1982.  He was also a member of the 1985 Cardinals team that lost to the Kansas City Royals in the Fall Classic. Injuries cut Lahti’s playing career short.  He currently coaches at Clackamas Community College in Oregon City.

Lahti was born in Oregon City and raised in Hood River.  He played his high school ball at Hood River Valley, and pitched collegiately at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Oregon, and later at Portland State University under legendary coach Jack Dunn.  He was drafted in the 5th round of the 1978 MLB Draft by the Cincinnati Reds, before being traded to the Cardinals.

J.J. Altobelli managed the Pickles to a 32-25 record in their inaugural season, narrowly missing the Great West League playoffs.
