Portland Signs Players from Washington State and Gonzaga

Portland signs players from Washington State and Gonzaga

January 4, 2018 | PORTLAND - Brody Barnum, the son of Portland State Football Coach Bruce Barnum, will be joining the Pickles for the 2018 summer.

Brody graduated from Skyview High School (Vancouver, WA) in 2017 and is currently playing in the outfield and pitching for the Washington State Cougars.

"Brody is a big strong kid who will have a chance to pitch and play outfield for us," said Wazzu Coach Marty Lees. "He shows a strong arm in the outfield and on the mound. He also shows power as a hitter that we are very excited about."

Barnum was a three-time letter winner at Skyview and a two-time All-Greater Saint Helen's League First-Team selection as a utility player. In his 2017 season, the 6'3" outfielder sustained a .474 batting average alongside 4 home runs, 10 doubles, 18 RBI, and 23 runs scored. On the mound, he went 7-2 with a 1.77 earned-run average and 73 strikeouts in 59 1/3 innings.

Daniel Copeland is a 6'4" right-handed pitcher also from Skyview High School. The current senior will be attending Gonzaga University after his 2018 summer with the Pickles.

"Copeland will bring a bulldog-mentality to our pitching staff," Gonzaga Coach Mark Machtolf said. "He is a great competitor who we think will excel on the field and in the classroom for us."

Copeland has claimed All-League First-Team honors three-times in a row; he earned First Team All-State honors during the last two seasons as well. Last season, Copeland led Skyline to a third-place finish in the Washington 4A State Tournament while maintaining a 4.0 GPA, the latter of which helped him achieve Honor Roll status for a third consecutive year.

"Once again we were able to bring in two highly talented and local players," said Rose City Baseball's Director of Baseball Operations, Gregg Swenson. "Brody is a monster as a hitter and a pitcher and will be a big part of WSU's success. And Daniel was one of the most sought-after arms in the Portland/Vancouver region this past summer and heads to a premier program in Gonzaga next fall. We are thrilled to host them this summer."
