Press Release | January 17, 2018
PORTLAND - RHP Brett Walker and Infielder Sam Novitske from the University of Oregon are ready to join the 2018 Portland Pickles.
"We set out to add players from the best programs on the West Coast, and once again we were able to do so with the additions of Brett and Sam," said Rose City Baseball's Director of Baseball Operations, Gregg Swenson.
Brett, a letterman of three years and senior team captain at Clovis North High School (Fresno, California), will compete this spring as a true freshman for the Ducks.
Ducks Coach George Horton had this to say of Walker, "Brett is a sinker guy from a three-quarters arm slot that gets a ton of ground balls. He will fit perfectly in our park and within our philosophy of pounding the bottom of the zone and letting our defense work. He has been the workhorse for Coach Patrick at a very successful Clovis North."
Walker won the Great West League Championship last summer with the Medford Rogues; he started seven regular season games.
Brett and the Ducks kickoff their season on February 14th against Loyola Marymount.
Sam Novitske is an infielder and current senior at Foothill High School in Pleasanton, California. During his junior year, Novitske lead Foothill to a 16-0-1 start, with seven doubles, and a batting average of .369, all of which were good enough to land him first-team All-East Bay League honors.
"Sam is a humble competitor that knows how to win," said Oregon Associate Head Coach Jay Uhlman. "He has quietly turned himself into one of the best shortstops in California. He excels with the glove and has a knack for getting the big hit when his team needs it. We are looking forward to Sam bringing his game and team-first attitude to Oregon."
Sam was also named to the 2017 Underclass High School Honorable Mention Team. His final season at the high school level is set to begin on February 24th.
