Pickles Sign Lefty from Washington State, Michael Newstrom

Press Release | January 26, 2018

PORTLAND - The Portland Pickles have signed left-handed pitcher Michael Newstrom from Washington State University.

Newstrom was the number two pitcher and three overall prospect in Baseball Northwest's 2017 Washington Rankings. He is currently a freshman at Wazzu, and the second Cougar signed by the Pickles for the 2018 summer (Brody Barnum).

"I've seen Michael several times and he can flat out deal," said Rose City Baseball's Director of Baseball Ops, Gregg Swenson. "He's a bulldog on the mound and will be a huge part of our success!"

The 5'10" pitcher out of Puyallup High School (Puyallup, WA) is a two-year letter winner for Coach Marc Weise. Newstrom is a two-time All-South Puget Sound League selection, earning First-Team All-State honors as junior in 2016 after posting a 1.20 ERA in nine appearances, striking out 54 in 35 innings of work while allowing just 14 hits.

"Michael is, in our opinion, the best left-handed pitcher in the Northwest," stated  Head Coach Marty Lees. "He comes from a perineal power in Puyallup High School, coached by Marc Weise, and [Newstrom] pitched very well in the Area Code games this past summer. We believe he can, and will be a starter in our program."

Washington State opens their spring campaign on February 16th against UC Riverside in Tempe, Arizona.
