Top California High School Prospects Signed for 2018

March 28, 2018 | PORTLAND - Today, the Portland Pickles announce the signings of NOAH CARDENAS (C) and MIKE PEREZ (SS) from UCLA.

NOAH CARDENAS will enter his Bruin career as the 30th ranked Californian prospect on Perfect Game’s 2018 Top High School Prospect list for the state. A defensive specialist behind the plate, Bruins head coach John Savage had high praise for Cardenas, saying he was “the best catch-and-throw player in this class in Southern California.”

Before his senior season, the young backstop played for the Milwaukee Brewers at the 2017 Area Code Games in Long Beach, CA, bringing even more high level experience to the Pickles’ already talented catching core.

Cardenas has an older brother, Ruben, who plays baseball just down the road from Westwood at Cal State Fullerton.

MIKE PEREZ joins Cardenas on the 2018 Perfect Game USA Top High School Prospects list (CA), but sits 13 spots higher at No. 17. With a lean, Troy Tulowitzki-esque build, Perez brings the Pickles tremendous athleticism and a slick-handed defensive skillset.

"Mikey is one of the best athletes in Southern California,” Coach Savage boasts of Perez. “He can run, throw, has bat speed and can hit for average and power. He is a very versatile guy defensively.”

Perez’s smooth swing has garnered him nationwide recognition as well, placing him on the 2017 Perfect Game Rawlings Underclass First Team All-American list, the Rawlings Top Prospect List, and earning him a spot on the Top Prospect Team at the 2017 Perfect Game National Showcase.

Mikey will continue his family’s Bruin legacy, joining his mother Heather Inouye-Perez, head softball coach at UCLA.

When asked about acquiring these future Bruins, Director of Baseball Operations Gregg Swenson said, “We are excited to continue our relationship with UCLA and Coach Savage. Mike and Noah both come from great programs and will be huge additions to the Pickles this summer!”
