April 18th, 2018 | PORTLAND - Today, the Portland Pickles announce the signings of JOHN BELLER (LHP) and AUGIE SYLK (LHP) from USC.
JOHN BELLER began his freshman season with the Trojans coming off of an impressive high school career at St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, CA. A two-year letterwinner, Beller’s 150+ strikeouts and sub 2 ERA earned him spots on Perfect Game’s 3rd Team All-American roster, as well as 2nd Team All State in California.
In his first NCAA season, Beller has settled in nicely, striking out 17 batters through 18 innings of work. Mostly used for relief opportunities, Beller is one of coach Dan Hubbs’ favorite weapons out of the bullpen, as he is second in opponent average (.232) as well as innings pitched (18.0) for all SC relievers.
AUGIE SYLK joins Beller as a freshman on the USC squad, coming from Palisades Charter High School in Los Angeles, CA. Receiving an abundance of local recognition on All-Region teams and All-City lists, Sylk’s deceptive arsenal frustrated opposing batters and helped him construct 3 no-hitters during his high school career.
Built like the modern MLB pitcher, Sylk’s tall frame gives him lots of room to build velocity and movement over his college career, and even over the Pickles’ summer season. Sylk’s great pitching foundation opened some eyes from Perfect Game, and they gave his stuff high marks. “[Sylk] gets good running and sinking life at times, and hitters don’t see the ball well. [He] dominates hitters when in the strike zone.”
Gregg Swenson was eager to acquire these two Trojans, and expressed his excitement on the development of Portland’s elite pitching staff. “Having two players from USC is a huge get for the Pickles. Both Beller and Sylk come highly regarded as left-handed pitchers, and I look forward to them being a big part of our success this summer.”
