Portland Tops Yakima Valley 7-4

Portland, Ore —

In a series of division-leaders, the Pickles took the opening game from the Yakima Valley Pippins 7-4 on Tuesday in front of 1,077 fans at Walker Stadium in Lents Park.

Portland scored three runs in the opening frame, added one in the second and sixth, and pushed two more across in the seventh to account for the total. The Pippins scored twice in the second and third innings for their runs.

Michael Newstrom (1-2) earned his first win of the season, pitching four elite innings of relief.  Newstrom faced the minimum twelve hitters and struck out ten of them, including striking out the side in the fifth and seventh.  Newstrom has now struck out twenty hitters in eleven innings this season, leading the West Coast League.

Noah Cardenas (Fr - UCLA) delivered a clutch one-out RBI-single in the sixth to score Brody Barnum in what would stand as the game-winning run.  Davis Delorefice (So - Utah) earned his first hit as a Pickle with two outs in the seventh, a single to left field that scored two more, accounting for the total.

Brad Bonnefant (Sr - Nevada) struck out the side in the ninth to earn his third save.

Game Two of the three-game series is Wednesday at 7:05pm.  Gates at Walker Stadium open at 6:05.  Follow @PicklesBaseball on twitter and instagram for the latest on social media as well as the team’s Facebook page, and listen live to every game on PortlandPicklesBaseball.com.
