Portland, Ore. —
Nearly 6,000 Pickles fans flocked to Walker Stadium for this week’s three-game non-league series against Gresham. The Pickles won the finale 12-1 Thursday night, allowing just two hits as a pitching staff for a second straight night. Mikey Perez and Joey Cooper hit solo home runs, and eight different Pickles collected hits at the plate. Portland had four-run innings in both the second and seventh frames, and out-hit the Wolves 9-2.
A trio of arms debuted on the mound for the Pickles, as Leo Nierenberg (Washington), Michael Frias (UC-Irvine), and Brett Walker (Oregon) all saw their first summer action. Joel Casillas (Cal State Northridge) started the game with a scoreless two innings, Nierenberg followed with four strikeouts over the next two frames, and Nick Paciorek pitched two more scoreless innings. Frias recorded all six of his outs with the strikeout, and Walker struck out two in his only inning of work.
The Pickles improve to 12-5 overall on the year, 3-0 in non league play. The Pickles and Greywovles will meet eight more times this summer, the next meeting taking place Saturday afternoon, June 30th at Walker Stadium. West Coast League play resumes Friday night as the Pickles visit the Walla Walla Sweets in southeast Washington.
