Portland, OR---The 2017 Portland Pickles seem to have a flair for the dramatic. With Sunday night's game against the Chico Heat tied at four going into the bottom of the ninth inning, Pickles fans were prepared for another walk-off victory. The team responded, on a fielder's choice ground out by Joey Cooper with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth inning. Cooper grounded to shortstop Justin Watari, who flipped to second baseman Kade Cloward for the second out, but the throw to first was beaten out by Cooper, scoring Griffin Mueller and sealing the Pickles victory.
Cooper had two hits, a single and a triple, and two RBIs on the night for Portland, and Mueller had three hits, including a two-run home run in the sixth inning, his first on the season. Renner Stecki had an RBI single in the fourth inning.
Matt Tomazin (3-0) earned the win for the Pickles. Pitching 3.1 innings out of the bullpen, allowing two hits, two runs, a walk, and a strikeout. Starter Josh Hendrickson went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs, and striking out a season-high nine Chico batters.
Aaron Hedgecock (0-1) took the loss for the Heat, going 4.2 innings out of the bullpen, and allowing three runs. Chico starter Brandon Vial went four innings, allowing two runs.
