Portland, OR---The Portland Pickles couldn't overcome a distasteful top of the first inning Tuesday night at home against the Yuba City Bears. The Bears scored five runs in the first inning and two more in the second in an 8-4 victory, tying the series at one game a piece.
Yuba City started the game with four consecutive hits, and Portland had two errors defensively leading to the five early runs. Dominic Diana had two RBIs on the night for the Bears, and Josh Winkler had four hits. The Bears finished with 11 hits total. The Pickles had four total errors defensively.
Bobby Kinne led the Pickles with two hits and three RBIs on the night, and Zander Clarke also collected two hits. Alec Leighton scored the Pickles first run of the night in an error in the bottom of the first inning. Joey Cooper reached base four times, registering a hit, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch.
Starting pitcher Jack Gordon (0-1) did not record an out, allowing three earned runs in the loss. Donovan Baldocchi gave the Pickles 3.1 innings of one run ball in his Pickles debut, and Sam Muskat finished the game with three scoreless innings and four strikeouts out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit.
Bears starter Landon Mitchell lasted just two innings, allowing three runs, but reliever Ryan Brown (1-1) gave Yuba City seven strong innings out of the bullpen, allowing one run and striking out six on the night.
The Pickles (9-11) host the Bears (6-14) in the series finale Wednesday at Walker Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05, and coverage will start at 7:00.
