Marysville, CA---The Portland Pickles were unable to seal the victory on Tuesday night at Colusa Casino Stadium. In a night in which Portland outplayed Yuba City through seven innings, the Bears clawed their way back into the game and won 5-2, scoring five runs in the eighth inning and stunning the Pickles. Portland had the bases loaded in the ninth inning, but was unable to score.
Zander Clarke gave the Pickles an early lead with a two run single in the second inning. He finished with two hits on the night for Portland, as did Kelechi Anyanwu.
The lead stood until the bottom of the eighth inning, when Yuba City marched back with four straight hits to start the frame, scoring a run on a double by Shaq Robinson and two more on a Josh Winkler single. They scored the two insurance runs on a Pickles error. Robinson finished with three hits on the night for the Bears.
Pickles starting pitcher Max Jones was brilliant through seven scoreless innings in a no-decision, He struck out five Bears batters on the night. Mitch Maynes (0-2) took the loss for the Pickles, allowing five runs in the decisive eighth inning.
Bears starter Danny Chavez went six innings in a no-decision, allowing two runs and walking seven batters. Reliever Nathan Gilmore (2-0) earned the win with two hitless innings out of the bullpen.
The Pickles (11-14) face the Bears (8-17) again tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05, and coverage will start at 7:00. The game can be heard on Sunny 1550, and streaming on picklesbaseball.com.
