Pickles Fall In Series Opener To The Knights

PORTLAND, Ore. (June 11, 2024) – The Portland Pickles (6-2) drop game one of the series 8-3 to the Corvallis Knights (8-1) at Walker Stadium.

The Pickles were led by DH Tony Otis (Pacific) who went 2-4 with two singles, a RBI, and a run. It was his first multi-hit game of the season. Sam Christiansen (Oklahoma), and Alex Overbay (UNLV), each added a single and an RBI of their own.

From the knoll, right-hander Dylan Smith (Northern Colorado) struck out four Knights hitters in three innings of relief work. In the top of eighth, right handed pitcher Dylan Skolfield (Wash St.) made his Pickles and season debut on the mound giving up no runs.

The Pickles and Knights each recorded six hits on the night, as well as committing one error a piece. Eight Pickles pitchers made an appearance in the ball game. Cade Reitzenstein (Cal St. Chico), Dylan Skolfied (Wash. St.), and Megumi Fukada (Science & Arts Oklahoma) allowed no runs in their lone innings of relief.

Key Moments of the Game

Corvallis jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first. The Pickles responded with a Tanner Griffith (St. Marys) leadoff single to right field, but a ground out and a pair of strikeouts delayed the scoring effort.

In the third, the Knights used two walks to push left-handed starter Christien Banda out of the game. Right-hander Dylan Smith (Northern Colorado) entered and struck out two, but the Knights manufactured another run and took the 2-0 lead. The Knights later in the bottom of the third inning struck out the side to keep the Pickles still at the plate.

The Knights added yet another run in the fifth, and in the sixth inning the Knights used a double, and a Grand Slam to take an 8-0 lead.

The Pickles lineup showed some life in the bottom of the seventh. A Tony Otis (Pacific) single, a Dominic Chacon (Grand Canyon)  walk, and an Alex Overbay (UNLV) single through the right side scored their first run of the game. The Pickles were again shut down with back-to-back ground outs to second base to end the threat in the seventh.

In the bottom half of the eighth inning the Pickles used three singles (Keighran, Christiansen, and Otis) to push across two more runs, but a pair of strikeouts from the Knights silenced the Pickles’ bats once again to maintain the 8-3 lead.
